I think when you put something like this together, you quickly learn that it isn't "all about me", it is "all about us". About what we all mean to each other and the important and treasured part we all played in one anothers' lives during one of the most difficult, yet fun, times in our lives. Tracy Scott (wasn't it great to see him?) said, "I feel like I've stepped back in time 30 years. Even though at that time, we were 17-18 year olds, we are all still generally the same characters."

I had to agree with him to a degree. Our characters have been slowly molded and transfigured since the last days at Middleton, but our inner characters are and always will be constant. It is truly amazing to see what God can do with an awkward, know-it-all, teenager as the years pass. Circumstances, experiences, joys, trials, tribulations, victories and tragedies...they all help us to be better people and acquire wisdom that cannot be obtained in any textbook.

Another chapter was completed this weekend and I would truly like to thank you all for being a part of it. I wish I could've been more helpful, but please know you were and always will be in my prayers. We never know what tomorrow holds, but knowing the One who holds tomorrow makes it easier to lay your head down on your pillow at the end of each day. God Bless you all and I hope to see you sooner than 10 years from now :)~ Love Ya!-Tonya

Hello to all....

My name is Nancy [Lemacks] Meek.  I was a member of the first graduating class of Middleton High School, 1971.

I was voted "Miss Witch, 1971" upon winning the Halloween Costume Contest for that year.  My prize was a $1.69 box of fruit-shaped, sugar-frosted gummy candy. Hopefully, some will remember me better by my impersonation of Lily Thomlin (unsure now of her last name).  She was the "One ringy dingy" switchboard operator....LOL

You will not be able to find a photo of me in the Senior Class section in the Variations yearbook for 1971.  I was too camera-shy to attend the photo session. I am, however, pictured in the St. Andrews school annuals for prior years.  If I had passed the 10th grade the first time, I would have graduated from as a Rock, instead of Razorback....Hmmmm  I remember there was a great deal of turmoil among the students who were forced to change schools when Middleton was established.  I will never forget the tiny water fountains and the itty bitty desks left over from when it was the Junior High.

My sister is Trudy Lemacks.  A picture of her appears on your memorial page.  Thank you so much for posting it.  I didn't have a copy of that particular school pic, so I took the liberty of saving a copy of it to my hard drive.  I didn't think you would mind.

Jim Maranville was a good friend of ours.  We were shocked when we heard about his sudden heart attack while eating dinner.  My husband and I first met him several years before he died. He soon became a daily visitor to our home.  We nicknamed him "Hemi Jimmy". Our cockatiel, Sparky, took to him right away.  Whenever she would hear Jimmy's truck pull up in our driveway, she would take off flying around the room screeching with excitement. She would then perch atop our open kitchen door and wait for Jimmy to enter.  After coming through the doorway, Jimmy would reach his hand up toward Sparky, who would eagerly jump onto it.  Jimmy would then transfer her to his shoulder.  He would then commence to rub her neck and talk sweet to her.

He told us that he used to own a cockatiel, but it died.  He said he used to feed it hot sauce, which it loved. I suggested to him that the hot sauce probably killed it. I don't think he appreciated me accusing him of killilng his bird.

I didn't know Billy personally, but I composed a poem honoring all nine firefighters who perished in the Sofa Superstore fire.  It wasn't until today, when I ran across Trudy's picture on the memorial page, that I learned that Billy had attended Middleton.  My heart goes out to his family.

I am posting the memorial poem here, for those who might appreciate it, along with the link to its two current locations on the web.

NINE COURAGEOUS MEN

Rushing toward the flames,
the billowing smoke and ash,
nine brave men ran in;
then, BAROOM!! came the flash . . .
a roaring ball of fire
making putty out of steel
falling upon their heads,
arms reaching out to feel
walls that were not walls,
rooms without a door,
sofas... tables-to-the-ceiling,
suddenly crumbling to the floor
strewn with lifeless bodies,
so burnt, so brave, so true,
dying to save somebody.
Thank God it wasn't you!

Thank God it wasn't you
who lost his life inside
as nine courageous men
faced the foe and died,
in search of any others
who might be trapped within,
men, willing and determined
to fight until the end,
which came despite their efforts
or willingness to serve,
their fate in higher hands
which created every nerve,
each organ in their bodies
each muscle, bone and cell
and souls who take the oath
to race into such hell,
where the timid dare not go
but are saved if found within,
thanks to our firefighters,
courageous to the end.

I leave this note to say "hello" to all my Razorback alumni, and to let you know of the passing of Vera Jean Smyth, a former educator at Middleton. Vera was the wife of Peter Smyth. Vera left us on November 28, 2008. Pete is still in Charleston and can be reached at:  p_smyth@bellsouth.net.

I agree with Kerry, the reunion was great. I hate that I was only able to make Saturday night, but it was great seeing everyone. I wish I had more time, because I did not see everyone. Thank you committee for doing such a wonderful job. I hope that life treats everyone well until the next time that we all can get together.

Hello Everyone! It was great seeing so many faces last weekend. I wish I could have talked to everyone. I was amazed at how many people were still in Charleston and had not seen each other. It would be great to do something more often for those who are closer. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did. Hip Hip Hooray to the committee and all of the work that made this a great 30 year reunion!

Can't wait to see everyone! I hope everyone will come, if possible. I have already spoke w/ several who are going to make it. Everyone I have seen at Billy's funeral or spoken with over the years hasn't changed a bit. Guess what? Neither have I and I'm still has hard headed as ever, do things my way (which of course is the right way) and still having loads of fun in life. We have another house in Costa Rica and Skipper will tell you all about it on Saturday night (no spouse for me on Friday so I can enjoy one good night!)...doesn't mean I won't enjoy Saturday with him but you all know what I mean even if you don't admit it out loud! Much love!

I have been lurking this site for several months now. Gotten in touch with a couple of long lost buddies and friends. After going to the family night for Billy (we were related by marriage), and seeing Randy, ... well, I've started to get excited and looking forward to seeing everyone again. Does anyone know news of my old friends Mark Knight or Rusty Smith? I noticed they were not listed in the "missing alumni" page. So they must be around somewhere. I look forward to seeing everyone in Seotember! So, after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I can start looking forward to the next big event in my life... the reunion!
